'Max Caffell's imagery is totally integrated with his work as a sculptor. He depicts the processes of sculpture and plays visual games in a photographic dialogue between his models, his maquettes, his studio space and the act of photography itself. His pictures are as much a part of his exploration of the concept of sculpture as are the sculptures themselves. We are drawn into his investigation of the way in which something tangible and three-dimensional finds another kind of existence within the physicality of the photographic paper. We are intrigued as he probes 'positive' and 'negative' space, creates melting or electrified edges and presents the illusion of receding planes. Through platinum he has learned to sculpt with light.' Philippe Garner - London, March 2004 |
